Be A Parent That Matters!
How old were you when you first started “thinking” about liking someone?
In Elementary School kids start thinking about it and by the time they are in Middle School, they are observing relationships at home, school and in the media developing their idea of what a relationship should be like. Even if your kids aren’t dating yet, they are watching those around them to develop the model they will use when they do start to date. You have an opportunity to help shape your child’s future relationships.
Conversation Starters:
· Are any of your friends dating?
· What are your friends relationships like?
· What makes a relationship good for kids your age?
· How do you expect to be treated by someone you like?
Actions:
· Ask questions and then Listen to what your son or daughter has to say. If you think your child is not listening to you, ask yourself if you have ever heard your own parents words coming out of your mouth J
· Encourage your youth to make a list of the ways he/she wants to be treated by a dating partner. Just having a list and being able to compare their list with the person they like can be a great ‘roadmap’ to a successful relationship.
· Be a good role model for your children with your own relationships. They are watching you!
