The Outrage“: An Educational Journey Through Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault

The name “The Outrage” is taken from the saying, “If you’re not outraged you’re not paying attention.” Start Strong believes that if people knew the statistical information about teen dating violence and sexual assault, they would be outraged.

The Outrage is an original twenty-five minute performance piece written by Allison Basinger, Outrage Coordinator at SAFEHOME, a comprehensive Domestic Violence agency located in Johnson County, Kan. The Outrage was created for the purpose of raising awareness and educating the Johnson County community about teen dating violence and sexual assault. Both South and Southeast High Schools began performing The Outrage in 2008, and as of today, The Outrage has performed at numerous local middle and high schools, as well as local business conferences, student workshops and surrounding Wichita high schools as well.

Following the performances for area middle and high school students, The Outrage actors answer questions from their peers. According to Allison, members of “The Outrage” “…have never had a school-based performance where someone does not come forward and disclose abuse.”After each performance resource cards are handed out to all audience members.

Current cast members at Southeast High School are: Ashley Frazier, Brandon Chaithonh, Derick Holmes, Jackie Robinson, Jay Tran, Jennifer Ruvalcaba, Jonathan Buster, Joseph Blue, Landen Swearingen, Lexi Rule, Ryan Patton, Shayla Sisk, Sky Birdcreek, Tara Burk, Taylor Gutierrez, led by Drama Teacher Ms. Martha Gates.
